Customs Clearance Service & Support

To help you secure all the customs documentation needed to pass through the borders smoothly, P&O Freight is launching a new Customs Clearance Service.

Customs Declaration

What is customs clearance?

The customs declaration process is mandatory when bringing goods through international borders. Importers and exporters are required to submit various commercial documentation, as well as pay VAT and any duties to the customs authorities. Often the customs process is completed by a third party, who will create the required customs documentation and deal with the authorities. There will be charges for their services and in certain cases, for example if customs wish to examine the goods, for the labour to present the goods to customs.

Goods can travel freely inside a country or within a Customs Union; the EU is a Customs Union and there are no customs borders between EU countries.

The UK was a member of the EU Customs Union but since Brexit was finalised, anyone transporting goods in and out of Great Britain must obtain customs documentation.

We know that customs declarations can be a complex and time-critical process. That’s why, in response to your feedback, we are delighted to announce the launch of our new Customs Clearance Service in preparation for the introduction of full Customs Control in January 2022. Rather than contacting a third-party customs clearance company, we can help you secure all the customs documentation needed to pass through the borders smoothly.

How long does customs clearance take?

Planning is the key to this, sharing information in advance and making sure all the correct permissions are in place before the goods are ready to move can save a lot of time. Communication is key and making sure everyone knows the plan and is kept updated will save time. 90% of all customs declarations are cleared in an hour. Some take longer as customs may want to ‘investigate’ the paperwork supplied further or even physically examine the good.
